METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing chewing gum from concrete depends on the gum’s age and level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left not long ago and it hasn’t penetrated the surface, we might be able to get it off by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping it off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the chewing gum to freeze into a more forgiving consistency compared to a gooey and stringy glob. Once the chewing gum is frozen, we slide a putty knife or scraper under the gum residue. Then we move the scraper very slowly under the gum and the whole piece should peel right off of the concrete.

The above method is only possible with gum that is brand new.

When we remove chewing gum that is already black, or is smashed down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water power washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees in order to melt the chewing gum. For this type of gum removal, we don’t use very high pressure because that could ruin the surface of the concrete!

Our team never uses any more pressure than needed to clean commercial concrete. These types of surfaces can be damaged a lot easier than people think, especially if they’re only a couple of years old. Concrete can need up to 100 years to cure completely. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our chewing gum removal professional.
